Not generally my thing, but so far very interesting. Both as a look into poverty, but also into the casual attitudes of early 20th Century Europe.

Quite fun to read. Orwell is great at very entertaining and detailed descriptions of the mundane. Although, Im unsure at this stage whether the story simply qualfies as a ramble

Our intention is swearing is to shock and wound, which we do by mentioning something that should be kept secret - usually something to do with the sexual functions. But the strange thing is that when a word is well established as a swear word, it seem to lose its original meaning; that is, it loses the thing that made it into a swear word.

You discover the great redeeming feature of poverty: the fact that it annihilates the future. Within certain limits, it is actually true that the less money you have, the less you worry. When you have a hundred francs in the world you are liable to the most craven panics. When you have only three francs you are quite indifferent; for three francs will feed you till tomorrow, and you cannot think further than that.

The Paris slums are a gathering-place for eccentric people - people who have fallen into solitary, half-mad grooves of life and given up trying to be normal or decent.

It'd be so much better if Orwell weren't utterly sexist and racist.

[]beggars, for when one has consorted w/ them, and found that they are ordinary human beings, one cannot help being struck by the curious attitude that society takes towards them. People seem to feel that there is some essential difference between beggars and ordinary 'working' men. They are a race apart-outcasts, like criminals and prostitutes [] tolerated because we live in a humane age, but essentially despicable.

Still I can point to one or two things I have definitely learned by being hard up. I shall never again think that all tramps are drunken scoundrels, nor expect a beggar to be grateful when I give him a penny, nor be surprised if men out of work lack energy, nor subscribe to the Salvation Army, nor pawn my clothes, nor refuse a handbill, nor enjoy a meal at a smart restaurant. That is a beginning.

It was interesting to see the subtle way in which he disassociated himself from "these here tramps." He had been on the road six months, but in the sight of God, he seemed to imply, he was not a tramp. I imagine there are quite a lot of tramps who thank God they are not tramps."

it's awesome.I don't have this haذit of writing a status when I'm in the middle of reading something,but this is something I'm really enjoying of.very inspiring and interesting.George Orwell had had such a crazy life.

Prepping for a trip to Paris. I plan to spend a lot of time in the overheated intestines of Parisian hotels.
