"Theirs is a job which offers no prospects, is intensely exhausting, and at the same time has not a trace of skill or interest; the sort of job that would always be done by women if women were strong enough."

I'm already really enjoying this, it's over a year ago that I last read one of Orwell's books, and I forget how much I liked his writing.

Chapter XXII seems relevant as ever about class relations and views on work and leisure.

I swear to you, messieurs et dames, that if it were not for that accursed law that robs us of our liberty, I would have murdered her at that moment.

It is altogether curious, your first contact with poverty. You have thought so much about poverty -- it is the thing you have feared all your life, the thing you knew would happen to you sooner or later; and it is all so utterly and prosaically different.

"It is altogether curious, your first contact with poverty...You thought it would be quite simple; it is extraordinarily complicated. You thought it would be terrible; it is merely squalid and boring. It is the peculiar lowness of poverty that you discover first; the shifts that it puts you to, the complicated meanness, the crust-wiping."

So far I'm relating his experience of being poor (through personal experience). What disturbed me a lot more is Charlie's description of how the best day of his life was when he raped a young peasant girl sold into slavery going on to mention that moment as the "best day of my life". It's no secret that slums also contain heartless c*nts willing to do harm.

هذه أول مرة لي في قراءة هذا النوع من الكتب ، تبدو المقدمة مملة بعض الشيء لكن ما إن تبدأ القصة الأساسية لاتستطيع أن تتوقف .
