I'm not sure why it's taking me so long to read it, because this book is sooooo good!

He might be ragged and cold, or even starving, but as long as he could read, think and watch for meteors he was free in his own mind.

They have simply been trapped by a routine which make thought impossible.

'The Parisian episode is fascinating for it's expose of kitchens of posh French restaurants'.
Though, in my own words, it's an entertaining read of misadventures at the moment.

this book is really antisemitic. I hope I'm not on some watch list because I wanted to check it out.

Fascinating "thick" description of poverty, particularly in chapter 3. The chapter is finished with a philosophical insight so profound: "It is a feeling of relief, almost of pleasure, at knowing yourself at last genuinely down and out. You have talked so often of going to the dogs - and well, here are the dogs, and you have reached them, and you can stand it. It takes off a lot of anxiety."

A plongeur is a slave, and a wasted slave, doing stupid and largely unnecessary work. He is kept at work, ultimately, because of a vague feeling that he would be dangerous if he had leisure. And educated people, who should be on his side, acquiesce in the process, because they know nothing about him and consequently are afraid of him.

This isn't much to my liking, but the book stays with you in some ways, and I keep reading.

The question is, why does this slavery continue? People have a way of taking it for granted that all work is done for a sound purpose. They see somebody else doing a disagreeable job, and think they have solved things by saying that the job is necessary.

Pemilik hotel lebih suka mengambil tukang masak lelaki berbanding tukang masak perempuan bukanlah kerana kemahiran mereka, tetapi kerana ketepatan masa mereka.
