Up to ch31. Back in London and this seems worse as an experience. I’m not sure why Orwell came to write this - but the stereotypes it peddles are pretty shocking to read.

Up to ch21. Wonder how on earth he’ll end up back in London.

Up to ch12. Fortuitous that just at the moments it looks like going horribly wrong something turns up.

Up to ch7. Truly a testimony to suffering and hardship with characters that are grotesque in their awfulness.

Not quite sure what I make of this account - young man steals money from his brother, gets drunk and visits a brothel where he seems intent on murdering someone. Is this meant to be entertaining?

Opening chapter paints a picture of a vibrant if sordid place.

So far the book is just starting to get to an interesting part where the main character is given a big opportunity to make something of himself. It is not my favorite book I've ever read at this point, but how George Orwell wrote it is super interesting. I like his style of writing in a way of explaining what's going on it the narrators head than using heavy dialogue.

“If you set yourself to it you can live the same life, rich or poor. You just say to yourself “I’m a free man in here”. He tapped his forehead.
Is this indeed the genesis of Orwell’s 1984? From the mouth of a screever named Bozo.

Croydon as usual setting the bar high...

‘In the Croydon municipal lodging-house, where the charge is only ninepence, there are cubicles, good beds, chairs (a very rare luxury in lodging-houses), and kitchens above ground instead of in a cellar. There is no reason why every ninepenny lodging-house should not come up to this standard.’

Well, this is bleak 😅 but Orwell sure writes vivid characters.

If you ever think you are Down and Out just read this. You’re not.

في الفصل دا بتكلم أورويل عن صعوبه العمل الفندقي ويوضح كيف انو الموظفين بضغضوا على بعض بالشجار و الشتائم اشان يبذلوا جهد أكبر وبوضح برضوا التمييز الطبقي بين الموظفين الطباخ طبعا الاعلى وبعده النادل وغاسل الصحون وعمال الكافتيريا هم الأدنى.

He is such a good writer.

Orwell makes his stories very interesting but no less real

“I imagine there are quite a lot of tramps who thank god they are not tramps”(199).
Orwell spends the last part of the memoir largely describing his life on the streets and the curious people he not only meets but learns their life story. He describes the negative connotation of tramps that he previously thought but once he gets close to them and becomes one himself, he see that it is more dynamic.

“A beggar, looked at realistically, is simply a business man, getting his living, like other business men, in the way that come to hand”(174).
Orwell compares beggars to working class people and asks why they are different and despised. He concludes that beggars too have sold their honor but choose a trade in which one does not “earn” their living.
