The fetish of manual work of the early 20st century seems to be replaced of information work of the 21st century.

The life of plongeur working 15-17 hour shifts makes one wonder if any other vocations are utterly pointless pseudo-luxuries in today´s world.
Do we really need a killer app and an army of couriers bringing you a burger at 2 AM when you just happend to have a groove for it after a night out? Do the supermarkets have to be open late hours for us to have a luxury to buy ice cream or a charger any time of the day?

p124-128 - fair social critique
p128 - I like the phrase "treadmill of boredom" for the modern pseudo-luxuries that really do not have any value... besides maybe providing a tiny fraction of comfort... yet turning the workers life into hell in the process of doing so. (p124 the example of rickshaw pullers... that are luckily banned in most places today or replaced by alternative tehcnologies.)

Insightful account of poverty in 1920s Europe. Interesting to see that there is classism at every level of society, even levels where you think you could sort people no lower. Also worth remembering that all people have pride, even when they have nothing else. 2.5.

Bozo is a very interesting character. Much of Orwell’s philosophizing on the nature of poverty and classism remains relevant today (sadly).

Fascinating look at everyday people in these iconic cities. I highly recommend this audiobook - perfect for a pre-trip primer!

First book by George Orwell, published in 1933.
The first half of the book reads somewhat like a travel diary as he recounts interesting people/stories from his time as a dishwasher in Paris. The second half of the book recounts his experience living as a tramp in England. His powerful analysis and conclusion will forever inform my heart and mind.
It's George Orwell, the writing is exceptional.

“And yet the plongeurs, low as they are, also have a kind of pride. It is the pride of the drudge—the man who is equal to no matter what quantity of work. At that level, the mere power to go on working like an ox is about the only virtue attainable.”

It is curious how one does not notice things. I had been in London innumerable times, and yet till that day I had never noticed one of the worst things about London–the fact that it costs money even to sit down.
Nothing new there then

Very few cultivated people have less than (say) four hundred pounds a year, and naturally they side with the rich, because they imagine that any liberty conceded to the poor is a threat to their own liberty. Foreseeing some dismal Marxian Utopia as the alternative, the educated man prefers to keep things as they are. [...] It is this fear [...] that makes nearly all intelligent people conservative in their opinions.

Cheguei a metade. A leitura é fácil, os capítulos são bem curtinhos e a narrativa é interessante

The main plot of this book is poverty, first shown as a ”plongeur” in Paris and later a “tramp” in London.
The writing style is rly great and entertaining and the story itself was good.
The problem of this classic, was the prejudices against (in the beginning) jews and partly against women. This rly put the book down in sake off ranking.
