Cringeworthy. Written in 1773, the 'humor' of the story revolves around a nobleman who insults and bosses around commoners, grabbing or raping the common women, but who is shy around noble women. He's supposed to visit the home of a noble-man friend of his father to meet the daughter, perhaps for marriage, but someone sends him to the home of the noble saying it's an in, and the owner is a commoner who puts on aires.

In a sense this is a very amusing concept for a comedy. There is a nobleman who is easy with the virtue of bar maids and servants, but is very modest before nobles. He's to meet, and perhaps marry a lady, but doesn't want a lady. He brother (ha ha) claims their home is an inn, and the nobleman goes about insulting everyone and tries to sleep with the maid -- the lady. Ha ha. Set for a happy ending?!

I find references to old age (in this case, in my century of specialisation) in absolutely everything these days, and they make me to want to make a list, and write a paper, and publish a book, and teach a course. It makes me feel alive. Anyway note to self: around 30% I believe it was there's a conversation between Mrs H and Hastings about women being old at 40/60 that is just *chef kiss*.
