Status Updates From De winter voorbij

Muy centrada en las historias personales de los personajes. Hasta ahora poco argumento (y poco plausible). Escrito tan bien como siempre.

Hmmm, so I'm about to read 3 stories framed by ONE where 3 characters share backstories and we are supposed to look forward to the Venn Centre it seems. All right, I'll give it a go. At least it gets me out of the 'Terminal Illness' plot lines and back into 'immigrant story' narrative (that I usually enjoy). Too soon to tell though.

I am really enjoying this novel; Allende has made her way onto my favorite author’s list, because of her depth of characters; this book isn’t a disappointment.

I want to really like Isabel Allende, but there is just something that is not exactly my cup of tea.

Lucia recovered from cancer but her marriage ended. Lucia and Richard finally discover their love for each other. Poor Kathryn is still frozen in the trunk of the car.

Evelyn became Cheryl LeRoy's confidant. Evelyn takes care of Frankie and they get along. Cheryl is a physically abused wife but lives with that because she otherwise likes her life. Frank LeRoy is into illegal business, possibly human trafficking.

Richard ran over his daughter Bibi when he came home drunk. Anita witnessed it and becomes catatonic. Anita's family once again takes over and squeezes Richard out.

As was the custom, they prayed a novena for them, since children spend nine months in their mother's womb before they are born, and because the deceased take nine days to be reborn in heaven. -page 319

They are finally at the cabin. Richard is sick.

Lucia marries lawyer Carlos Urzua. They have daughter Daniella.

Evelyn, Richard and Lucia will drive from Brooklyn to Canada.

Allende's fall. Lucia goes in the Venezuelan embassy for protection. Her brother Enrique, accused of being a guerrilla fighter. Lena refuses to leave the country until she knows what became of her son Enrique.

Lucía y Richard. Tan sólo llevo 24 páginas y me gustan estos personajes. Qué bonito escribe Allende!

A Lucía le pareció que él se veía más apuesto que nunca y sintió un chispazo de pesar por el amor perdido, que se apagó de inmediato. En verdad no sentía nada por él, sólo agradecimiento por ser el padre de Daniela. Pensaba que le haría bien tenerle un poco de rabia, sería lo más sano, pero ni eso se le daba. Del amor encendido que le tuvo durante muchos años no quedaba ni el rescoldo de la desilusión.
