Needed something lighthearted and distracting to listen to

Funny & interesting enough but maybe reserved, the tasteful lens of her life… seems mostly but maybe not entirely honest, like, with herself. Enjoyable but not profound?

Retta is a national treasure

Fight the fear and go do what you gotta do. That's what you came here for.” I NEED TO REPLAY THIS IN MY BRAIN A MILLION TIMES A DAY YES THANK YOUUUU

There are some comments that have made me cringe a lil bit (a joke that bordered on ableism, for one), but overall I have enjoyed this quite a lot. I like that even though I'm reading it (not audiobook), I can hear everything in her voice. She writes like you're having a conversation, and I really love that. Retta is great.

I feel like the bare minimum for a memoir (or collection of essays like this one) is getting your unique voice across, but I have to say Retta is as funny in this book as she is irl. She’s a great writer.

Dream girls would’ve been a very different movie with Retta as Effie. Her voice has always been amazing!

Love Retta. Lots of fun stories. Had no idea she went to Duke. I’m on a strong minimalism kick though, and the chapter on her love of purses was a strange contrast after reading so much anti consumerism stuff.

Forgot I bought this a while back. Trying to make some progress on my physical TBR here and there this year.

Listening to the audiobook is a must. I'm only two chapters in and have laughed hard enough to possibly shake walls. 😂

Loving it!

Marietta is hilarious in her autobiography. She writes like she speaks, which makes it easy to become immersed in her story. I'm looking forward to learning more about her audition for Dreamgirls.

The parts of this book that aren’t spent obsessively name dropping are entertaining. The name dropping bits are exhausting and make up a large portion of the book.
