I gave up on this book once before but it keeps popping up as a suggestion on KU so I thought I’d give it another try. Now I remember, it’s historically inaccurate. If I hadn’t read so many other books set in the Victorian era, it would be okay, but I keep getting yanked out of the story. Part of the whole attraction to historical mysteries how they solve crimes without any modern day conveniences.

I think the worst thing an author can do is make a bibliophile character constantly quote books. It just makes the character look like a pretentious asshole rather than relatable to readers, which is my problem with the main character. He’s more of a cardboard cutout than a character.

Another issue I’m having with this book is the set up. It’s well... boring. And the amount of times it starts with someone’s first and last name and some bio is annoying to say the least. I do not care about these random characters even a little.

Slowly moseying along. The book is really not good quality like it kind of feels like the writing is amateur with a lot of pointless dialogue and most of the characters are one note with a lot of irrelevant information about them repeated in an attempt to flesh them out. Glad I got it free.
