“You’re an outsider in an insulated community that has ways vastly different than the valley. There are moonshine stills in more places than I can count. Those men are edgy and skittish with revenuers and set traps to catch people as well as animals.” Welcome to the holler.

This book is really good. The language used is more rural than I’ve ever read before. It was a little hard to understand at first, but once you dive into it the story behind it is amazing. The characters are so well written in their old age. The stories the characters tell within the book are also really good. Many lessons to learn throughout.

Kind of a rough start.....the slang from one character is tough for me to read.....and she has a husband who beats her....tough for me to stomach. But, I'm liking the different perspective from each other character.

This is one of those books that probably won't win any literary prizes, but that's fine, because it is an enjoyable story with interesting characters...and some are real characters indeed.

Hmmm....not that far in, but thus far, I am not a Southerner, but I can imagine that this is too stereotypical of the South in a way that can be seen offensive.

It’s started slow and I wanted to put it down but I’ve stuck with it and it’s much more I interesting as I get into the second half.

Had to chuckle when Prudence (a name that suits her very well) was describing her grandmother's "very close veins".

I want to read more, I really do. But between working full-time in a new position, going home and fixing dinner for the family, and homework with 2 of 3 kids, by bedtime I am beat . . . 20 pages at lunchtime seems the norm for me now, and it is so frustrating because I love to read.

"Do you know the saying 'Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater'?"
The teacher in her don't give me time to say so, when she adds, "Well, you write about the baby when everyone else is writing about the bathwater."
