Ch. 27 - Pride goes before the fall and that fall was spectacularly funny. Ch. 28 - Cranford is a mean piece of work. Since Herriot wrote many bestsellers, I'm thinking it worked out in the end.

Ch. 25-26 The kick from the stallion was frightening. The chapter about the calves with lead poisoning and the bull with sunstroke are wonderful. These animals seemed to be goners and all they was required to heal them were epsom salts and water. The joy of seeing miracles must make up for winter hardship. I hope he shares more stories about "Flossie" Harbottle. Somebody knows it!

Ch. 23-24 You really have to admire vets of this era who endured brutal conditions--cold, wet muck--to care for animals. The story of the cow with milk fever was glorious. The tactics of Mrs. Harbottle are marvelous but it is not clear if she has won the war. It is hard to hate lazy, good-for-nothing Tristan because he offers so much comic relief.

Ch. 19 - The ball chapter was hilarious. Siegfried may mock Herriot about his relationship with Tricki but I think it is out of jealousy. Ch. 20 - Siegfried is the master of a one-sided converstaion to Mrs. Harbottle's dismay. Ch. 21 - Even though Tristan is a waste of human flesh, I almost felt sorry for him. Ch. 22 - Grier's prank on Herriot was priceless.

Ch. 15-18 A mare, hens, and pigs under Tristan's tender care. What could go wrong? EVERYTHING! Mrs. Harbottle meets her match in a power-play over the books. Siegfried may want law and order in his bookkeeping but he's really an anarchist. Finally, a horse teaches Herriot a lesson in humility.

Ch. 13-14 The letter to Mister Tricki was too much! The last names (Pumphrey and Harbottle) leap off the pages of the Hobbit but they are real last names. Herriot's dry wit and the egging-on of the three amigos is marvelous. I cannot wait to see whether the new secretary has met her match.

Ch. 11 - SOB!

Ch. 12 - Poor Tristan. He manages to get it wrong even when he is trying.

If Siegfried is bad the greers are worse. This is not a perfect system. Pausing my read through now to join the Juneteenth reading challenge!

Ch. 10 - What a yummy chapter! Yorkshire pudding and Handel's Messiah. What's not to like?

Ch. 9 -- The pranks between Tristan and James are hysterical. It reminds me of Navy pranks.

Ch. 8 The stories about Siegfried and cars are wonderful. They are basically death traps and he's so hard on them. He says one thing and does another, but, for some reason, I still like the old chap.

Ch. 7 - The stories about Tristan and Siegfried are priceless. It's hard to be mad at the elder brother because he truly cares about the younger brother even though he can be very gruff. It's hard to be mad at the younger brother because he gets out of problems in such clever ways. Siegfried seems like the boss who is tough and grumpy but has a heart of gold.

Oh wow I would super duper hate working for this Siegfried chap, even struggling to see some of the humour at more than 80 years distance.

Ch. 5-6 The chapters are short and easy to read. Herriot's first solo flight is high drama and a good lesson about standing up to bullies when you know what is the right thing to do. He is relieved that his boss takes the situation calmly because he feared the worst. However, seeing his boss lay into his younger brother reminds him that he needs to be careful.

Ch. 3-4 Anyone who passes up on this book because they think it is about animals and how to treat their diseases has missed a gem. In between the stories about being a vet in Depression Era Yorkshire are humorous stories about humans in all their variety. The character sketches are marvelous!

Herriot's job interview is just hilarious, The people of Yorkshire remind me of the people of Newfoundland--wonderful, full of practicality and wit, but impossible to understand. Ch. 2 is a lesson in what happens when you assume.

I'm loving this book more this time around. I read the series in the 90's. Crazy to think that's already over 20 years ago.

Ch. 1 is the more strenuous than usual birth of a cow. The graphic description of the process catches ones attention but may only interest students leaning toward veterinary fields or animal science. The farmers are wonderful and the description of the know-it-all uncle was priceless. The young doctor seems to have been properly humbled.

I need something fun, light, and inspirational right now!

Chapter 9

I first read this when I was a teenager and didn't really like it but I just watched the show and absolutely loved it. Thought I'd give the books a try again while I wait for the next season.

After watching the newest remake of this show I was completely smitten with the characters and wanted to read the book. Imagine my delight when Audible had this book read by Nicholas Ralph, who portrayed James Herriot in the show. As someone who tends not to be a fan of audio books, to have it read by the incredible Nicholas Ralph, makes this audio book a truly amazing experience. Please check out this audio book!

Good so far but it’s kind of slow

What a delight this book is!! I am obsessed with poor hapless Tristan and Mister Tricki Woo.
