If you decide to become a veterinary surgeon you will never grow rich but you will have a life of endless interest and variety.

Misfortunes which would make the city dweller want to ban his head against a wall were shrugged off with "Aye, well, these things happen."

Often, too, they would slip half a dozen eggs or a pound of butter into the car as I was leaving. This hospitality was traditional in the Dales and I knew they would probably do the same for any visitor, but it showed the core of friendliness which lay under the often unsmiling surface of these people and it helped.

When I stepped out into the sunshine and the scent of the flowers it was as though I was doing it for the first time. The clear air held a breath of the nearby moorland; after being buried in a city for three years it was difficult to take it all in.

Animals are unpredictable things so our whole life is unpredictable. It's a long tale of little triumphs and disasters and you've go to like it to stick it.

It helps to be good at the job, of course, but even if you're a positive genius humiliation and ridicule are luring just round the corner.

Listening to the audio version read by the talented Nicholas Ralph ( James in the PBS series ) is pure joy ! I can't recommend it enough . 🥰

What a delightful book! I appreciate my farmer husband and veterinarian brother-in-law a little more.

Current audiobook: Such heart warming stories! I’ve laughed and cried. He is a great story teller!

[spoiler alert] sort of (or just very natural experience of a vet’s daily experiences).

read Chapt 11, I have to comment: like so many of the stories… Dr James Harriot describes the putting down of a older gentleman’s dog who suffers painfully with a large cancerous growth (inoperable) — but, his skill with dealing not just with his patient, it’s the dog’s owner, that needs the veterinarian’s care!!

Reading slowly because I never want it to end.

I hadn't realized how funny this book was going to be! What a joy :)

Only on chapter 14 and I love this book. The authors writing style pulls you into the story as you meet each new character. You can picture everything and everyone as you read.

Not that I need another book marked "currently-reading", but this just came through from the library so I must read it.

I absolutely adore the new PBS series adaptation of this book, and I'm so glad I finally get to read it!! :)

Delighting in this! The new series really captured their attitudes well, I think

Herriot has met Farnon, the vet whom he will be working for. On the tour of vet clinic Herriot has seen it’s a different way than what he was taught by in school. He has already had two patients whom he has helped. On their way home they stop at the local tavern where he meets various different people. He also meets a mysterious person who tells him about a secret ointment. He was offered job and accepted it.

This is already SO good.

Just started this book and love the character Uncle already. I can just picture this gentleman sitting on the hay watching and telling how this other veterinarian does it while Herriot is trying to deal with calf. Uncle doesn’t mean to be mean he just thinks the other way is better. Uncle is set in his ways.

I’m reading way too many books right now, but this audiobook is narrated by Nicholas Ralph. And I need my daily cottage core.

It’s slow-going, but I’ve learned more about 1930s veterinary instruments than I thought possible
