I love this book even more because James Herriot has an obvious love for the animals he cared for. Even when the outcome for an animal is not good, he doesn't draw it out to make it all dramatic and sad, which makes all of the stories so far enjoyable. It is very interesting hearing how things were done in veterinary care in the 1930's and how far they have advanced in some way but not in others.

In all these years, I can't believe that this is the first time I am reading this book and I am pleasantly surprised at how closely the show on PBS follows some of the stories. It is such an enjoyable read and I can definitely imagine rereading this one.

What a nice lighthearted book about English life as a veterinarian.

This is entertaining, but long. I'll be glad to finish. I've enjoyed the stories but don't feel compelled to read the next book in the series right away.

This is a long book, but I'm getting there. I like listening to the experiences and adventures of this rural veterinarian. It is so much more than just animals.

This is a l.o.n.g book. 442 pages it says. I'm listening to an audiobook and have already listened six and a half hours, but now I see there are another 9 hours in the book! Good thing it is entertaining and that there's humor. I'm currently in chapter 31 out of 67 total.

Lovely, lively book full of difficult men, offbeat women, some unexpected humor and occasionally, animals in need of expert medical care. This is much more a people story rather than an animal story. I'm loving the brotherly relationship of Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, and the bookkeeper! This is a book about rural English life, with a few veterinarians thrown in.

I'm listening to the audiobook version. Can't believe I've never read this book before - and that so far there hasn't been even one dog or cat patient - they are all cows and horses, things like that. Livestock! C'mon, we need dogs and cats too! I'm reading this for the VT Reading Challenge prompt #56 - A book about animals OR geography. Animals won out. Have you ever tried to find a good book about geography?

Me before starting this: I dunno…I chose it, but am I in the mood for fluffy?
Me now: What do you MEAN, I’ll regret this in the morning?? It IS morning, you fatuous plebeian. I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

I love a book that makes me laugh out loud. I don’t know what most of the medical stuff is but he writes well enough that the story isn’t lost.

I had known Siegfried long enough to realize that some of his ideas were brilliant and others barmy; and he had so many ideas and they came in such a constant torrent that I often had difficulty deciding on which was which.

Probably it was because I hadn't dreamed there was a place like the Dales. I hadn't though it possible that I could spend all my days in a high, clean-blown land where the scent of grass or trees was never far away' and where even in the driving rain of winter I could snuff the air and find the freshness of growing things hidden somewhere in the cold clasp of wind.

That quotation about never having time to stand and stare has never applied to me. I seem to have spent a good part of my life -- probably too much -- in just standing and staring and I was at it again this morning.

Veterinary surgery was a childishly simple matter in a warm bar with a few drinks inside you.
