In The Great Controversy, one challenge John Wycliffe (and the Christians) had to face was staying strong in faith while the church of Rome forced them to practice their religion. He says, "covetousness, pride, and deception were the gods of Rome" (White 85). This shows that the Romans were unwilling to let people worship anyone but the pope so they deceived and forced people to submit to their religion.
