The opening 3 chapters are fairly quick reading, and set things up nicely. However, the attempt to create tension is far too o.t.t p- in fact it fails miserably. The lawyer is ambushed at the start and forced to smuggle a bomb ( inside his jacket) into the courthouse. To ensure compliance with the Russian mobsters, his daughter has been kidnapped. No chance of either of them being killed, so no real tension.

Just 20 pages in and Mr. Flynn already finds himself in a doozy of a pickle.

I'm pretty sure that the guy called Arturas is Lithuanian. Even if they miss ū in his name. Seriously.

Is the author unaware that the Prosecution can also object for relevance? Miriam should have objected several times during the course of this questioning.

Um...no, that isn't how that works at all. He wouldn't be going to jail for violating the agreement, but rather because he committed the other crime.

Um...how does that protect you from your drug possession conviction? Pleading the fifth does nothing for something that is unrelated to the ongoing trial. The other one is a separate entity. Why would the state uphold its end of the bargain if you yourself did not?

This novel is like if Michael Bay wrote a novel. Action for the sake of action that has nothing to do with the story.

....why would one of them not go with him? I know there are tensions, but it's already been said that they won't do anything because that risks starting a war.

That never would have worked. No judge would dismiss the case based on that line of questioning.

Does it really make sense for the Russian Mafia to not do background research on unknowns?

There isn't a single shred of evidence of the Judge's bias against you or your client. That courtroom scene was a joke of bare minimum research and no representation to your own bias against the lady judge. I hate this character.

Why would you purposefully throw the item that could cause the bomb to go off in the air? There's confidence in your hand, but then there's just plain stupidity. This was definitely stupidity.

Why didn't you look at the wallet when you were changing in the other room? I know it was mentioned as you literally transferred it over to the jacket.

He has a new cut on his cheek and the detective didn't bother to mention it!?! This novel is just atrocious. Bad dialogue. Bad placement of background information. Severe lack of logic. Improper research. I will only finish this novel because it's a Reader's Choice and it deserves a not so pleasant review. Why is this so highly rated? I can't fathom this.

This is unrealistic. He wouldn't be able to get away with this in questioning; Miriam would object--most likely it would have been sustained in most of his questions. Not only that, but she wouldn't have used his example about the Christian archeologist and the earth being 5 thousand years old as it's a faulty equivalent to begin with.
