Status Updates From The Man Without a Shadow

Somewhat repetitive so far, which I suppose is apt given the subject matter (one of the central characters is an amnesiac who can only remember either things that happened before his accident or the previous 70 seconds)

I really like the mood of the story. Even though it is love tragedy, it tells a really great story.

The trouble with JCO : she keeps one awake at nights! Continued reading this last evening: when I checked the clock it was nearly midnight. Soon be finished at this rate... yet another beautifully written, fascinating novel.

Putting this down for now. It is just not holding my attention. I'll try again another time, typically I enjoy Oates.

Really enjoying this so far. I've worked with many individuals with brain injuries and memory loss, and already feel attached to E.H. I relate a lot to the narrator.

I couldn't get through the first 50 pages... clunky and tough to follow :/

Uncomfortable stilted prose, handled in a very detached third person manner. The topic is uncomfortable, the unethical relationship between a researcher and a brain-damaged subject. Nothing really felt real. I'm on disc 9 of 11, and the end can't come soon enough.

Why did this book get so many rave reviews? I found it tedious. The author used repetition, italics, parenthesis apparently to make the reader think & feel what the characters did, but it was boring and annoying. There was a little tease about a mysterious drown girl in the amnesiac's distant memory, but nothing ever resulted. Joyce Carol Oates is super famous as a brilliant author but I thought this book was boring

struggling with this book. I find it extremely repetitious and boring. I am in the medical field and if you are not, you may struggle with a lot of the medical jargon in this book.

Oh dear I feel like it's de jar vew all over again.. Wonder if it's worth ploughing on..

Very different style than Mulvaneys but interesting so far

I hope this gets better. I love JCO but this is a snooze fest so far.
