God I love Neil Gaiman

It was good to read his reflection on real world events.

He has some interesting ideas and quotes, but right now its going into one ear and out the other.

One chapter in and I’m swooning over the content and more importantly that Neil Gaiman is reading to me. Am I a little obsessed? Yes, yes I am!

This is going back to the library unfinished. I enjoy Gaiman, and I LOVED the first section ("Some Things I Believe"). After that, my mileage varied. This is partly format--I LOVE Gaiman as a reader, but I wanted to skim the pieces I wasn't as interested in. Not easily done on audio. But it's also partly me & my mood at the moment (I grabbed the print copy and it's sat here unread). I'll likely return to it later.

Just starting this to dive into a work by a man I do appreciate.

Anche se amavo Tolkien e avrei voluto aver scritto il suo libro, non desideravo affatto scrivere come lui. Le parole e le frasi di Tolkien mi sembravano elementi della natura, come le formazioni di rocce o le cascate.
Chesterton era l’esatto opposto: ero sempre consapevole che l’autore di quei racconti assaporava le parole, le godeva, le disponeva sulla pagina come un artista dispone i suoi colori sulla tavolozza.

Ma la cosa che ho trovato più interessante è il modo in cui i libri di Narnia si erano insinuati in me: scrivendo mi rendevo conto spesso di aver preso in prestito frasi, ritmi, il modo in cui erano assemblate le parole.
C.S. Lewis è stato il primo che mi ha fatto desiderare di diventare uno scrittore.

I libri sono il modo in cui i morti comunicano con noi. Il modo in cui impariamo da chi non è più con noi, il modo in cui l’umanità si è costruita partendo dalle proprie basi, in cui è progredita, e ha incrementato la conoscenza invece di doverla imparare daccapo ogni volta.

Gaiman's essays and are thoughtful and delightful. I'm in a peice right now about how important it is to teach children to read and to enjoy it

One of the missteps of including so many book intros, is that we dint get the full negative side of some of the authors. Lovecraft especially was racist, but you can’t write that in an intro to his stories.

Where are the women? Has Gaiman never wrote an intro for a book by a woman (that wasn’t his wife)?

I have learned more about comic books than I ever wanted to know

Widely ranging overview of nonfiction material the author has written on a whole host of topics. Almost all interesting and touching enough for laughter, tears or wonder in different ways than the stories he writes which have won him acclaim. I'd suggest going the extra mile and finding the audiobook of this one, you can hear how much he loves the works and people he's talking about.

Giving this another (slowly paced) listen to calm my finals-addled head.
It's working.
