Amendment: The Owens women do know love, but only for each other, NOT men.

Finishing my book has been put on hold because my eyes are so watery from sinus surgery I can’t see well enough to read. 😭

I know this book falls under the category of "magical realism" or "contemporary fantasy," but... For a book that talks so much about love, none of this feels like love, not really. I think all these women are just infatuated and very, very horny. I guess the emphasis is on the magical fantasy part. I find it difficult to relate to 30 yo adult characters that are acting so stupidly, like hormone riddled teenagers.

It pains me to say this but... the movie is SO much better, this book is kind of ruining the story for me

The writing style is super strange.
The first thing I noticed was how she uses hyperbole but as a reader you’re never sure if she means it or not? I found it super unrealistic that Sally started cooking for Gillian when she was in 3rd grade. That’s age 9 or something? Also some of the writing feels like she’s trying too hard to make you feel something.

So far, I think the harsh reviews of this book are crazy. I haven't seen the movie yet, but this book is cute and captivating.

I remain confused. The entire book is narrative - there is not much dialogue between the characters. In other cases I would have a. problem with this, but I have been able to get through the first two parts very easily. There aren’t many natural breaks, so I find I can read large chunks. It feels like we’re in a stage of setting up, I’m not getting much actual story telling. We’ll see if/ how that changes!

Eh. I want to like this book so badly because I know it is a classic, but I am getting so bored. It is basically a narration of these people‘s lives, which isn’t bad, but it feels like I am reading a movie manuscript
