did i start this as a seasonal read in the fall of 2021? yes. will i finish it before the fall of 2022? this remains to be seen

I never knew that this quote came from this book, but I had always liked it.

Interestingly vulgar lol. I’m basically getting the vibe that this story, book one of the series, is all about character development; so now I’m going to have to get book two to get to the good stuff.

No mention of the Auntie’s loves from RULES OF MAGIC - minister’s son & Navy man.

Absolutely love everything with Gary! The whole last part (levitation) is the best part of the book

Doesn’t seem familiar to movie seen long ago - except for characters. They’re the same.

My favorite book

Meh. I was expecting something similar to the cute movie with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but this novel takes itself very seriously so far. And the narrative is weighed down by soooo much exposition ugh.

Yeah I don’t like the book in the same way that I like the movie. It doesn’t scratch the same magical, whimsical, cottage core, sisterly itch that the movie does. I like it. But just as it’s own thing. And not as much.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is very different from the film but also true to the others in the series I have read recently. The Owens women always have something to teach about relationships.

This is soooo different from the movie. And not in a good way. I'm trying to remain hopeful.

Annoyed with the discrepancies about Maria Owens. The way she harmed her arm, her reaction when the wife answered the door, etc. I imagine someone who didn’t read Magic lessons immediately before Practical Magic would notice, but it’s really bothering me. Maybe due to how bored I am with this book so far 😭

Sally and Gillian might as well be Dorothy Zbornak and Blanche Devereaux discussing how to raise their teenage granddaughters. At this point the book is 95% practical and only 5% magic.

Hoffman's prose is beautiful.

I’m rereading a bunch of books via audio. Libraries are awesome.

Quick re-read for Aunt and Niece Book Group! Oh how I adore this magical book

The novel doesn’t seem to mention much use of magic so far. It is mostly about how the Owens sisters deal with their experiences with men and how Sally raised her daughters. I also am reading the novels in chronological order and not the order they were written, which has caused me to be very aware of discrepancies in details between each book. It makes the overarching storyline feel a bit muddled and messy.

Not a plot hole. I was thinking the author was talking about the University of Cambridge, but she definitely meant the city in Massachusetts where Harvard is located. That’s my error.

Plot hole: Antonia’s crush/boyfriend Scott is introduced as a former student at her high school who now attends Harvard, but then the book later states he’s going back to Cambridge at the end of the summer? Did he transfer? Minor inconsistencies in the stories. The novels written after this one don’t quite match the details in this one. It’s odd and makes the story feel a little muddled and messy.

2 star read so far it’s that it a classic catch up for a discord sever otherwise i would dnf it because I find the book absolutely boring and can’t connect with the characters and magical realism is simply not an genre I enjoy reading
