I am once again pondering, if it is the youth of the narrator, that's keeping things rather more (deliberately?) shallow, than what I was perhaps expecting/hoping... oh, well. It's not all too bad, so, just taking it as it is.

Oh, FFS; I thought this was an SFF trope. But, seems to come up unexpectedly often in other fiction as well.

"I could feel the calloused pads on his palm where he'd gripped the bat."

(Really, I'm not mad, though - quite the opposite. The opening expression just gave pleasant balance to the sentence).
