Philippe hadn’t thought. He simply hadn’t thought. He’d simply bolted through the dark, like an animal sprung from a trap, because he would do anything for her. He simply could not differentiate what was best for her or for himself, because they seemed one and the same. And he supposed that was what happened when someone else was your heart. You couldn’t help what you did.

Her hands slid up to latch around his neck . . . . . . and somehow he was falling; no, he was floating. He wasn’t memories or demands, he wasn’t duty or revenge; he thought he was his purest self, perhaps for the first time ever.

It was just . . . She stopped. The break in his voice when he’d said the word “home.” That little break was very like a crack in his facade through which light poured. How she longed to see through to the other side.

This has a real Jane Eyre vibe about it - brooding, wounded hero, feisty housekeeper and a sexual charge which could power a small principality.

You guys. The ending is a Lyon scene.I'm about to go full white girl and break out a "I literally can't even."
Weird thing bugging me, the somewhat villainous woman wears a blue gown and her color seems to be blue in the story while our hero imagines our heroine in red and buys her a red ribbon, so the lady on the cover should be in red, right?
I don't even know how I notice or why I think about these things :/
