Finished the Quicksand section. Not sure whether to give it a 4 or a 5.

Helga went to her family in Chicago and was rejected by the white side of her family; she moved to Harlem and was happy until she got tired of black society endlessly discussing the race problem and hating all whites, which is hurtful to her; now she's in Copenhagen with more open-minded white relatives. The problem is that she is viewed as "exotic" and doesn't feel she fits in.

In the first chapter, the protagonist Helga decides to leave the racist Southern town where she is trying to make a living in the closed-minded educational system for blacks. Pretty fancy language, but not too difficult to understand. Interesting commentary on race and social class in (presumably) the 1920s.

But, how could Quicksand end like that? I'm upset.

I see some of myself in Helga, forever searching for a home. Helga began to regret that she was leaving......why couldn't she be satisfied in one place?
