Leeming meets Baldwin for the first time:
"... a small black man with huge eyes who paid no attention to me as he scribbled furiously on one of the pieces of paper until he abruptly stopped and stared for some time at what he had written. “God,” he said, “it’s finished.” As it turned out, he had just written the last words of Another Country. For the first time, he looked at me. “Hey, baby,” he said, “I’m Jimmy."

And he spent his whole life longing to be picked up and sheltered by what he thought of as the power of love in arms stronger than his own.
