The way James Scott Bell describes plot makes so much sense to me. The part I was missing for clarity about the doorways the protagonist has to walk through was my missing piece in my head. I have them in my plot already but the clarity helps me understand those points need to be driven home to help connect with my reader. Really loving this book so far!

I'm just 34 pages (2 chapters) in, and this book has already proven to be really helpful and insightful. I like the way it's structured in sizable bits, boxes, diagrams, plus summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter. It's also quite entertaining to read and the examples Bell gives are easy to remember and work with.

A superb book! Full of great ideas. It explains some crucial things like "how to build suspense", creating characters, the middle and the ending. I'm at 47% and already there's lots of practical advice. There are lots of examples to illustrate the advice and also some advice which I felt isn't practical really so I just skimmed through it.

up to the character arc or what happens to the main character during the story. this is not the plot but what the character learns from it.

He advises using his LOCK system...L is for Lead, a strong lead character. O is for objective, a real object or purpose. C is confrontation not character -- plot determines character not the other way round and K is for knockout - a clear ending. No GWTW pseudo endings.

Now I've read a lot of books on writing, and thought I couldn't really learn anything new. WRONG! That was my hubris. This book rocks, even if it's the first book on writing you've read, or the twentieth.

There are about 2 dozen post-it notes sticking out of the book right now, marking tips I want to remember...and that is in just the first few chapters.

So you have to open every scene with a hook, follow up with intensity and end it with a bang. Easy, right? *Left eye twitches spasmodically*
