No one is writing like this… Melchor is above the rest.

TW:
Sexual descriptions, graphic sexual fantasies, underage substance abuse.
So far, this book is interesting… if starts off a bit graphic. The writing is superb, though.

This book does have really good writing, very descriptive with long long lines. And some of the scenes that are painted in your mind are very calming and beautiful. Like when polo is fishing with his grandfather, or dreaming about swaying in his boat in the sea or being in the security hut with cenobio the older security guard

How’s is it that polos moms lectures and my moms lectures are almost identical slkskskska like when she says on pg 42 about polo entering his own house in the middle of the night like a thief and the number of times I’ve heard mom say the same thing to Kevin

Much like this author's Hurricane Season (which I loved), this book is unsettling and difficult to read on several levels. But sheesh -- she's such a good writer!!
I'm a captive audience on a plane later today; I'll likely finish then.

Pg 28: polos mom lecturing him really gave me a flashback of all the countless times my mom lectures me on the same pointless things over and over again. You just get so tired of hearing it day in day out you just want it to end. Although maybe my mom isn’t as demeaning as his mom. But she does just make me feel absolutely terrible

Melchor’s writing style is to die for. The sentences run on for pages, jarring, violent language makes this novella utterly propulsive. I’m so excited to continue reading.

I just love the madness and hysteria in this woman's words, omg! Pure gold. This is the second book by Fernanda Melchor that I have encountered and it reads just as brilliantly, furiously and perfectly.

As much as I loved Hurricane Season, and here similarly enjoy Melchor's style, the novelty of the voice has worn a little, and the verbal tautologies nag a little...still v good, mind.
