This version of The Nutcracker is VERY different from the one they show us as kids!

Attempting a reread through audiobook. I don't know why I didn't go the audio route last time.

Wow…. I knew this wasn’t going to be like the ballet but I wasn’t expecting this.

Finished “Nutcracker and Mouse King” by Hoffman and it was… interesting for sure. I’d give it a solid 3.25. I didn’t love the narration or story structure, as the whole middle part of the story felt very rambly. But I did like the Nutcracker and Marie, and the story itself was fun.
Onto Dumas’ version!

Is this really the content of the ballet? How do they dance in such silly costumes? I’ll have to watch a video of it some day. Why was this story popular? How is it a classic now? Anyone should be able to publish with this as precedent. Hmm.

‘from which it is to be concluded that Clara found in the end that quiet domestic happiness which was so agreeable to her cheerful disposition and which the inwardly riven Nathaniel could never have given her.’

He rushed out, and Clara, deeply wounded, shed bitter tears: 'Alas, he has never loved me, for he does not understand me,' she sobbed aloud.
