Hmmm...I think the same people who robbed the Turners made an appearance at the Tophams cottage. I bet they've been robbed as well.

Nancy is the sweetest girl! Such a do-gooder. This book is definitely dating itself because unfortunately people don't quite tend to help unfamiliars like they used to.
And the Tophams are so arrogant and pretentious, I really hope Nancy finds a second will just to take away some of their smug, upety attitude.

I forgot how old these books really are and the language the writer uses is pretty old fashioned.
But an interesting mystery is already starting so hopefully it will get interesting.

Part 2; Her father is nice, doing the work for free, thou the joke about "Well unless we see results" was a bit too much. Should do it for free regardless if these girls get money.

Rereading for this month's TBR jar challenge and sincerely hoping nostalgia serves me well and I'm able to retain my love of Nancy Drew.

I'm actually surprised how much I like this, especially after having been rather meh about the Hardy Boys book I read.

The way the people in this book interact with each other is so weird to me. It seems that people were actually nice to each other and cared about their neighbors back in the day ...

"As Nancy stood looking wistfully at the old clock she little dreamed that in the near future she would be involved in The Hidden Staircase mystery, a far more baffling case than the one she had just solved."
Nice job advertising the next book at the end of the first one.

This is her dad's reaction after Nancy returns from being locked up by the robbers: As the lawyer kissed his daughter good night, he added, “My dear, you were in serious danger when you encountered those thieves. I don’t like to have you take such risks. I am very grateful indeed that you are back home safe.”
Wow that's it? If I were her dad I'd be worried sick and be mad and totally ground her.

People attend luncheon. Nancy wears gloves when driving. She also speaks to the mayor. So classeh.
And illustrations! Fuck yeah.
"The child looked very cunning in a pink play suit."
"Nancy drove as rapidly as the law permitted" - so responsible

Enjoying all the old timey words. A dress is a "lovely pale-blue dance creation" and looks "darling" and "very chic".

Nancy seems to do a lot of thinking out loud. Guess we can't all have our own Watson.

Though Nancy is 18 here, the words are simple and paragraphs kept really short, for the target audience. If I were ten years old and reading this, it would be like having a cool older sister/cousin to look up to.

I thought I'd dip into some Nancy Drew. It's certainly a blast from the past. The writing and thought processes seem almost unnatural. Certain words like "she asked excitedly" reveal how dated this is. In the first paragraph Nancy is immediately described as attractive, and later on, "becomingly dressed". Her father is also described as handsome. It's like looking at the pages of an old magazine set in Pleasantville.

I read almost every single Nancy Drew book as a kid and I absolutely adored them. I still love these books, they definitely remind me of my childhood and are entertaining!

I'm adjusting to the Nancy Drew thing because, all my childhood, she was named Alice Roy (yes, French translators are often drunk). It seems it aged well, I'm enjoying it, even if events happen conveniently.
