every abuse he sees, and give much valuable teaching,
Making you wiser, happier me."

In the midst if The Achrnians, which is entertaining and actually funny, although figuring out the references is a little tiring.

I'm reading a modern translation? Anyway, I hate this. It's really not my thing. I'm realizing I really do prefer Sophocles and the more "traditional" themes. Straight people arguing about sex bores me to tears.:-)

I just started reading, and I'm loving it already. XD Ancient Greecian sex comedy.

Lysistrata appears more thoughtful and comedic than Clouds, detailing the blissful (and as yet uncertain) peace treaty between Sparta and Athens at the hands of the women. Revolutionary for its time in both comedic values and appreciation of women, Lysistrata is both appealing and rewarding to read.

During the first half of Lysistrata, the protagonist is portrayed as confident, enthusiastic and energetic; a rare sight for women both in tragedy and comedy. Aristophanes' Lysistrata is enjoyable to read and wondrous to consider as realistic, though at times it is bogged down by clunky exposition and references to esoteric subjects.

Clouds - Aristophanes' most controversial play by far - is also certainly one of his most enjoyable. Full of such pivotal characters as Strepsiades and Socrates, Aristophanes delights readers and audiences alike with crude humour, self-referentiality to the very brim, and some very esoteric comments on sophism.

1ST ATHENIAN When we are warm with wine, how wise we grow. 2ND ATHENIAN That's only fair, since sober we're such fools: This is the advice I'd give the Athenians-- See our ambassadors are always drunk.

Aristophanes' style of writing differs from most tragedians of the period with which I am familiar, but the essence of comedy is not lost, even after two thousand years. Clouds follows Strepsiades in an effort to learn rhetoric to get out of his debts, and satirises Socrates to great success. The play is ribald and enjoyable, without being emphatic or disingenuous.

WHY hadn't I heard of this a long, long time ago? It's state affairs, feminine equality, and a Greek comedy!

The plot setup is already hysterical. Haha, at one point on the page the script is not printed and it's switched to scrawled (poor) script! Kalonike's line: "What if they drag us into the bedroom?"

"In my opinion," [Aristophanes says], "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." Well, since you don't want to offend anyone, yet you want to make sure everyone's happy.
