I just finished reading the introduction parts of this edition. I am always intrigued how much better Penguin Classics editions does introductions better than almost any other edition I have read to date. If a first time reader of Aristophanes, this is always a must.

My yearly Greek Play choice: I read Aeschylus and Sophocles and Euripides last year, plays by Aristophanes seems like the logical transition. I am really looking forward to rereading Lysistrata. I hope to read 9 more Greek Plays this year though.

I'll be starting this on Monday.

This is the most pornographic book I have ever laid hands on. Can't remember ever having read so much explicit content.

A few days after the women of Athens seize the Acropolis:

Cinesias: There, listen! At least hear our child... don't you feel pity for the child? He's not been fed or washed now for six days.
Myrrhiné: Poor darling, your father takes mighty little care of you!

Patriarchy at its best since 400 BC.

Le cose più tremende
minacciano: che devono
arrostire col fuoco
le femmine sacrileghe.
Mai le voglio vedere Atena mia
tra le fiamme: ma riescano
a difendere i cittadini
dell'Ellade dalle pazzie
della guerra. [...] Per questo
ti invoco alleata
o Tritigenìa: se un uomo
le appicca il fuoco porta
l'acqua assieme a noi.

Is it the most respectful depiction of women? No, but they are so clever and I love it anyway. Such fun so far. Let the schemes and strikes begin!

Lysistrata is very entertaining. Aristophanes was a great change of pace to balance out all these dire tragedies. His plays are charming and actually funny, and also full of fart and sex jokes. He was much less prude than we are today. I'll think about a review later.

The Clouds is a play on Socrates, who was active when it was written. It's crazy claims were made here in humor and intended to be silly were wildly untrue. The slights insinuated Socrates was atheist, among other false "crimes". Some 16 years later Socrates would be condemned to death on similar charges. (!) Anyway, here it is actually entertaining.

now on Lysistrata - which is thoroughly entertaining.

Finish Archarnians, which was entertaining. Now in midst of The Clouds, which is equally charming and funny.

One complaint on the translation - they replace Greek puns that don't translate with bad, not-at-all funny English ones that aren't funny. Think it would better just to translate and footnote the puns. Of course, can't footnote on stage - but there is not point is just adding a pun because the Greek had one
