Status Updates From Permutation City

Almost...there...just trying to get to the end, check it off my list.

Almost...there... It's a dry read for the most part. Not as good as I remember it on first reading. Just downgraded from 4 stars to 3. Bracing myself for the sci-fi religious allegory that I remember cringing at a little when I first read it.

"If you were a Copy, you'd believe the dust theory, too. You'd feel the truth of it in your nonexistent bones."

"Brain the size of a planet--and here I am, counting to ten." Egan quotes Douglas Adams, here in the context of an experiment in distributed consciousness. The quoted character is a digitized "Copy" of a person. The Copy's software is spread out across 1000 computer sites around the world. Everything (including counting) feels normal to the Copy, though.

Re-reading this thought-provoking novel. Not claiming to get all of it. Bonus points for "Solipsist Nation."

Great opening. I am highly intrigued by this book

So it's back to an easy read. There's just one concept in the book I struggle with (as do some of its main characters) and I only need to work at reading it when that concept comes up.

I finally hit a point in the book where I have to pay closer attention (i.e. it was previously a typical "easy read").

Loving it so far. Wish I didn't have to visit the dark corners of the Internet to scrounge up a digital copy. Foolish publishers.

Taking a break for some new releases. Got the new Chloe Neill, Janet Evanovich and MaryJanice Davidson books from the library today!

Some of his premises seem really arbitrary. The demand for processing will outgrow supply, therefore Copies will be shut down so weather control can fix drought and floods. Or Paul's idea that Copies could evolve in ways organics couldn't, modifying their minds, redefining their goals, etc. Why?

I like the idea that individuals (as opposed to the militaries or big businesses) bid for processing power at any point in time. At a point of high demand you may not be willing to pay as much as the next person for the finite resource.

It will be interesting to read this after just finishing Altered Carbon. Have to remember that this was written almost a decade earlier.
