The police priming mods are an interesting necessary 'evil'. Their benefit was displayed to great effect during the chapter, and their unsettling reality was displayed just as well by the end of it.

Zeno's Lethargy is an interesting thought.

"[The Bubble] came into being as a whole, in an instant - but because the earth was eight light-minutes from it's centre, the time-lag before the last starlight reached us varied across the sky, giving rise to the growing circle of darkness." Huh... well that makes perfect sense.

I haven't read this in a few years, and I'd forgotten almost everything about the first part of the book -- stuff I really like, too!

I'm in your brain, hard fictioning your thoughts. Man, hard sci-fi is ridiculously ugly and awesome at the same time!

I'm going to read every Egan novel I could check out at the library, as a break from 19th century prose.

Ok, I had guessed wrong wrt cause/effect. I guessed what would solve a problem, but now my guess is about what caused the problem. Cool.

I think I figured out how this will eventually converge on page 84, but I'm still enjoying it.
