Art expert= art student, art historian, artist, professional, gallery owner etc…
Naïve = the Schmis, the novices
Experts prefer:
- abstract works (vs naïves prefer representational work)
- high art from museums (sentimental portraits)
- art is not there to please the crowds
- experts focus on background & rekationships of the objects, structure & composition (naïves focus on details eg hands, faces)

Art is not solely the result of an artist’s behaviour. It depends on the viewer’s behaviour too. Art feels like a handshake between the creator & the audience. The artist puts forth something as art, and the viewer has to choose whether he/she can relate to it. If a work confuses you, or makes you feel uncomfortable, then one can call it art. Whether it is good art, that is a different matter.

One can make an analogy with language: learning to speak is a universal, innate predisposition for all children even though individual children learn the particular language of the people among whom they are nurtured. Similarly, art can be regarded as a natural, general proclivity that manifests itself in culturally learned specifics such as dances, songs, performances, visual display, and poetic speech.

DISSANAYAKE > 1995's Homo Aestheticus:
At first glance, the fact that the arts and related aesthetic attitudes vary so widely from one society to another would seem to suggest that they are wholly learned or 'cultural' in origin rather than, as I will show, also biological or 'natural.'

I wish I owned this book (library copy - yea for our libraries!) because there are so many things I’d like to underline.

!!! You have to place the object of art in the timeline of art history. You cannot trust your instinct as it is influenced by mass culture that surrounds you. Your gut falls back on the safegy of what’s accepted by society.

WILD journey behind-the-scenes in the modern art world. Bianca is asking the question we're all wondering: What does weird, modern art mean? What would it take to have "the eye" for art? She has no idea what she's asking for, but she goes "undercover" for all of us who are curious.

I would never have chosen to read this book, but it was suggested to me and it is always good to try different things… That being said, I am annoyed beyond the imaginable, at the ridiculousness of the “art world”. I should not be surprised by any of this. The writing is GREAT and it is very engaging even if I roll my eyes at “Jack” who is a shallow jerk. BUT, we shall see what happens lol

Artists have always been abused. Art has always been misused. Some things never change. So infuriating.

It's a riveting book, but I've got 3 digital books checked out of the library & I'm going to have to push to finish this in time, then start another book, and another. I should've deferred the hold when it came through! I'm enjoying it, but I'd enjoy it more if I could read it over a longer period of time...
