I hadn't picked up this book again in a while, and I still can't seem to get good pace going, which is seriously frustrating.

This book is the bane of my existence and I'm so confused, because sometimes I genuinely enjoy reading it, but others it is a battle to get to the end of the chapter. I'm soldiering on.

The incest has come into play in the novel and the narrator's wife stole a baby...things are getting pretty hairy!

I love the emphasis on stories- how we as humans can only understand our world through the metaphors of stories.

So far so good! Didn't realize how much I'd forgotten, considering this was one of the books I studied at A Level, and I found it a bit difficult to get into at first. However, it's beginning to flow now and I'm being drawn back into the rhythmic flow of the story.

First of all, it's Mary's fault this is happening; Tom has nothing to do with it. Second, I want to ask my professor why we are reading this book because it is just SO WEIRD. Lastly, writing in books, even used ones, is just wrong.

I have to read this book for one of my classes and I'm already bored. This book has over 3 stars on here. Please tell me it's going to get better.

Finally! After hours of trudging through the Fen of this book I am rewarded! The approach of the climax has been palpable for some time, but the tension has not broken yet; its getting better and better still, and I feel an epiphany is near at hand!

This novel is infuriating. Much like the theme it jams in the readers face, the novel repeats itself, again and again, with each sentence, each page, and each chapter, another repetition. There are so many interesting moments, and so much tension building, that the pace quickens--only to be brought to a stand still by some digression or another. Infuriating.

Is it starting to pick up now? I think it might be--in fits and starts at least. I classify the books that I read in two categories: books I can read laying down in bed, and books that I cannot read while laying down in bed. This book is one of the latter.

In July 1940 Hitler contemplates - as in 1805 Napoleon had contemplated - the invasion of England. Only to put it off and go marching off to Russia. Just as Napoleon did.
Now who says history doesn't go in circles?

Your position - am I right? - is that histoty is a red herring; only the present matters.

Am loving this - the story is as unstable as the waterlogged summer pastures.
