Law of Accelerating Returns (LOAR) and Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind (PRTM): the neocortex has become a evolutionary biological phenomenon. The cerebral neocortex performs recursive hierarchical thinking while the cerebral cortex creates arbitrarily complex structures of ideas. Homo Sapiens' neocortex has been responsible for every book, painting, song, discoveries, and all ideas.

I read the 1st part of this book about 5 years ago and for some reason put it down. There are highlights in the book from me up to page 70.

Going back to this book where I left off after many years since reading it, I realized I came back to it with a much more versed stance on the topic, so reading and comprehending the content is much easier than when I first started. Although my academic background is not in computing, Kurzweil writes as much on neuroscience as he does with artificial intelligence. Surprisingly, I still enjoy this book.

Recursion, according to Chomsky, is the ability to put
together small parts into a larger chunk, and then use that chunk as a part in yet another structure, and to continue this process iteratively. In this way we are able to build the elaborate structures of sentences and paragraphs from a limited set of words.

Language is itself highly hierarchical and evolved to take
advantage of the hierarchical nature of the neocortex, which in turn reflects the hierarchical nature of reality.

A similar mechanism triggers old memories. Usually there is an entire chain
of such links. Even if we do have some level of awareness of the memories
(that is, the patterns) that triggered the old memory, memories (patterns) do not have language or image labels. This is the reason why old memories mayseem to suddenly jump into our awareness.

Tbh I don't really like the idea of synthesized neocortexes PLUS I only understand half of what he's saying. This book ferls like a hitchcock Movie to me.

Then the Explanation of free will which is purposefull decision making which also resembles consciousness and there were several other explanations but I found these two useful.

Learned about neural nets, their training, the weights that tells when to fire a neuron.
Leared about Vector Quantization which is a dimensionality reduction algorithm related to clustering of audio frequencies.

Now I am starting to feel like I can simulate brain😂(Maybe or May Not), The Blue Brain Project is so fascinating and their projections say that they'll be able to simulate a brain by 2023 sometimes I feel regretful that why I started everything late but ya in the end it's a great feeling 😁☺️

3 Chapters Done. I've read about Pattern Recognition intuition and the development of Neocortex

Hot damn. This book doesn't fuck around. It straight up illuminates concepts I've been always murky about. What is a thought? How does our brain process external stimuli to recognize letters, then words, then meaning and context and so on? Why can't we easily recall a memory backwards? The concept of pattern recognition is revolutionary (to me). I must read further.

I picked up this book by recommendation of a friend on facebook. Not for the light reader, as this book goes into some complex terms and comparisons to validate the authors points in regards to human thought.
So far a thoughtful read for anyone interested in the power of the mind. My suggestion; take your time, and take notes in the margins for some of the more complicated concepts in this book.

Hierarchical Hidden Markov Models and neural nets.

I had a low opinion of all the A.I. hype and then I discovered the freeware program "GNU Backgammon" which uses A.I. techniques to play the game backgammon. It taught me much and forced my game to a new level. However, there is - IMHO - an infinite gap between A.I. intelligence (which I admit may far outstrip human) and self-awareness leading to emotions and fear.

Oh boy, Kurzweil is having fun writing down his thoughts however unrelated they may be to the book's thesis. Good for a conversation, not that much for a book people pay for.

Impressive that at 16, Kurzweil was already interested in AI modeling and had the guts to send a letter to one of the pioneers of the neural net movement in the 70's.
