A note on fragments as a "stylistic" choice": I feel like fragments should be used to emphasize certain things or scenes and shouldn't be relied on as heavily as Kitamura does. Fragments are great if you can slip a few past the reader for emphasis, but if used too much, they're distracting. If you use fragments for rhythm, it might ruin the novel's "flow". There were plenty of instances where this was the case.

Not very impressed with this one so far, though it's fulfilling my requirement of wanting a quick read that I can finish by tomorrow. The writing is a bit strange, and I've just started noticing use of full stops where I would use commas, e.g. "He lay in bed and his dreams multiplied as he watched the hill crawl with new life. Hardly knowing if it was hallucination or not.".
