Oh this is going to be a ride, says I!

A surprisingly laddish and funny historical novel about some ancient Syracusans putting on a production of two Euripides plays, using Athenian prisoners from the failed Sicilian Expedition. Not at all convincing historically, but a fine entertainment about the theater.

Look, it's just weird that I've never read a book that had Euripides and his Medea play a significant role in the themes or plots, and now I'm reading TWO AT THE SAME TIME??????

Since requesting this ARC, I have learned Ferdia Lennon isn't a woman, but that cover is still hilarious and I will give it a shot anyway. Disappointed, though.

This is very Martin McDonagh meets Euripides and I am DELIGHTED.

Trying again with the audiobook on Spotify. I couldn't get into the ebook version for some reason.

I’m struggling with this one and I don’t really know why. I’m going to put it down and come back to it in a few weeks.

Like the beach scenes in Banshees of Inisherin, the story becomes a proper tragedy when you see the other side of the war.

This story is mostly meditative--whether a particular scene is humorous or romantic, nostalgic or playful--but the author writes dramatic action well too, finally putting this talent on display as dress rehearsals conclude.

Fans of theatre should find this one irresistible.

There's something very Fitzcarraldo here. Moving, poetic, visceral, funny.
