Every page is me trying to figure out what this novel IS, but I think that's the point...?

Interesting how overt the hierarchies of power are already in this narrative, and how Lampo even comments himself that he treats the Athenians the way the aristos treat him. Literally no idea if I'm going to like this or not but it's not like anything I've read before so very intrigued

Amazing classical story of captured Athenians in a Syracusan slave quarry mounting a performance of Euripides. Unforgettable characters. An almost unimaginable accomplishment - crafting a page-turner from a mythical dramatic production.

I’ve been struggling to get into my next fiction and then I found this. It has me listening nonstop. I can’t imagine consuming this without the audio book experience. Excellence so far.

You can tell this was written by an Irish person because of how “fuck” is used like a comma.

I feel like there’s deeper meaning here, but I prefer wading in the shallow.

I’ve been trying to understand what’s nagging me about the narration of this and I think I finally get it. The way the main character talks to and about other people is dehumanizing, he’s completely detached from the suffering and pain. It makes the entire thing feel unreal

I started this book as a personal read but after the first 10 chapters, I fear the whole book club must share this with me

Never would have guessed it, but turns out stories of Ancient Greece benefit greatly from a bit of Irish brogue.

This book so far reads as if the main character is perpetually stoned and in a dreamlike state. Do with that what you will.

- Irish narrator
- athens vs syracuse (athens is winning? I need to freshen up my history knowledge)
- main charter is cyclopes??
- sneaking into dungeon like vibes to feed the athen people(s) but they have to be in the theatre production (sneaking to do so ?)
- using audio book-may switch over to physical book

This is so cheeky. Peloponnesian war, Athens v. Syracuse, Greek mythology, but with an Irish voice at the helm. Lennon is making me chuckle and then making me feel bad about it. I’m loving it

'The main role in Trojan Women is Hecuba, and there isn’t even really a discussion about who gets it. Numa’s the best we have and is eager, so it’s his. After that, the key one is Cassandra and then Helen. The blokes in this play don’t do much but be pricks. Menelaus pops in near the end, but he has scant to say.'
