All good pictures do not need to be self-explanatory, but they do need to be explainable.

Food metaphor! Pizza vs 3-course meal. Most images need to be pizza meals (simple, satisfying, functional). Sit-down dinner = big how and why elaborate pics, decision-making and conversation.

SQVID: Simple (vs Elaborate), Quality (vs Quantity), Vision (vs Execution), Individual (vs Comparison), Delta [change] (vs status quo)

Collect everything. Spread it out. Establish underlying info coordinators [who/what, when, how much, where, how, why]. Practice visual triage [visual distinctions easily spotted by: proximity, color, size, direction, orientation, shape, shading].

God, this garage-box, lack of big picture, confusion-shock-anxiety thing is so... so very plausible.

This is one of those books I will be referencing to incorporate the ideas to develop a new way to think about problem solving. The more one practices the ideas in the book, the better one becomes at using illustrations to solve problems.

The essence of this book can be distilled down to one central idea. Visual thinking is an extraordinarily powerful way to solve problems, and though it may appear to be something new, the fact is that we already know how to do it.

I need to make a copy of the matrix Dan Roam created to help me choose which picture to start with. It's also really nice to get into case studies, because it helps clarify the progress from start to finish.

Finally started reading this. Really blew my mind when he points out that all charts are plotting two of the six W's against one another. I also love that he brings a lot of cognitive science into his writing.
