Status Updates From Dokuz Öykü

I'm six stories in and the collection really strengthens as it progresses. "For Esme'--with Love and Squalor" is a real high point of Salinger for me so far. (And such a great title.) Outstanding. More to go, but that story easily brings this from a 3 to a 4 all by itself.

I have this marked as read, but it was long ago and I think it's quite possible I read Four Stories or Five Stories instead of Nine Stories; after enjoying Franny and Zooey earlier this year, I'm going to do a(nother) read.

JD Salinger is the absolute best at writing shit talking. When Eloise was telling Mary Jane about Lew’s taste in literature? Oh man. Can’t beat it.

He leído cuatro de los cuentos esta mañana y, pese a la simpleza narrativa que caracteriza a Salinger, me han encantado.
Es una pena que muchas de sus obras nunca vieran la luz.

“The Laughing Man” Reminds me of the naivety of my classmates and I while listening to Mr. Dent’s stories.

“Just Before the War with the Eskimos” Every single story feels like I am jumping into the middle of a conversation and I just have to pick up the context as I read along. However, the endings usually make the whole situation come together, this one ended more vaguely than I would’ve liked.
