Started reading this today because I wanted a break from SF&F.
"A Perfect Day for Bananafish" certainly had an unexpected conclusion.

Slow progress, because I have to sit and think about each little story once I've finished it. My favourite Salinger book by far.

Banana fish: me destrozó
Before the war with the Eskimals : me encanta su forma de básicamente contarte un montón sobre la psiquis de sus personajes mientras dice pavadas
The laughing Man: no me destrozó,me hizo mierda y me rompió en mil pedazos
Down at the: muy adorable y triste a la vez

i tried to keep reading after finishing “a perfect day for bananafish” but my mind kept thinking about it and i had to stop.
“a perfect day for bananafish” might’ve been the best short story i’ve ever read. i was a bit confused and uncomfortable but the ending redeems it

I haven't been reading much for a few days outside of speculation about WW3 which is lurid escapism for me and not actually anxiety-provoking.

"Just barely leaving the cab door open, she walked briskly and obliviously, like visiting Hollywood royalty, into the building. Ginnie, her face burning, paid the fare.[...]At fifteen, Ginnie was about five feet nine in her 9-B tennis shoes, and as she entered the lobby, her self-conscious rubber-soled awkwardness lent her a dangerous amateur quality."

Salinger's last book in his lifetime was published when he was 44. He lived to be 91. I think he was somehow a stunted author. I don't mean that he was childish, but stuck. What he is when found is interesting. Is he the author of the book Chapman was obsessed with when he shot Lennon or the main influence on Wes Anderson's best, early films or one of the writers bookish teens read in the process of becoming an adult?

Well then, there's another one, "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period." Salinger? Huh. So so so good.

It’s so silly. All you do is get the heck out of your body when you die. My gosh, everybody’s done it thousands and thousands of times. Just because they don’t remember it doesn’t mean they haven’t done it. It’s so silly.

I mean they don’t seem able to love us just the way we are. They don’t seem able to love us a little bit. They love their reasons for loving us almost as much as they love us, and most of the time more.
