It shows a cavernous view of the mouth of a man being attended by his dentist.
The man's tongue is a simple, U.S. Treasury hundred dollar bill, and the dentist is
saying, sadly, in French, "I think we can save the molar, but I'm afraid that tongue will
have to come out." It was an enormous favorite of mine.

"Am I very late?" she asked the Chief, smiling at him.
She might just as well have asked if she was ugly.

This time I am reading the stories starting at nine and working backwards. One story a day. Hope to finish by June 16.

"A Perfect Day for Bananafish": Is this a preview for the rest of the stories? Masterful. Disturbing.

She wrote to him fairly regularly, from a paradise of triple exclamation points and in accurate observations.

I just finished reading a biography of J. D. Salinger and was inspired to reread Nine Stories. I enjoyed the stories forty years ago, but the biography added a whole new dimension. Also, my new plucky attitude is allowing me to read the stories in the order of my own choice! I read "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" over my lunch hour today and then read "For Esme--with Love And Squalor." Great details, great dialogue!
