But when the boat passes them, how does he know they still exist. He also questions the English language using an arm. Why is it called an arm, what makes it an arm, why isn't it a foot. The whole English language is convention instead of reality. For example what does a ring symbolize, marriage. But what really is a wedding ring, just a piece of round metal.

The theme of this novel is reality vs convention. This keep popping up in his stories such as Teddy. Teddy questions what is really reality and what is convention. For example Teddy sees orange peels in the water outside his porthole on a cruise ship. His train of thought pulls him to thinking if he hadn't seen the orange peel how would he know they were real and how does he know where they came from.

Two stories in and I have to say they've both been good. they're quite unsettling, but I guess I expected that.

Finished "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" I think I'm liking his shorter stories better than "Catcher"

The stories have grown less abrupt, the first being "what the fuck, that was quick," the second where a woman wants to believe she has been a nice girl all her life, the third with a woman who leaves an apartment/condo, and the fourth (the last one I've read) where the narrator is told to go to bed. The tone is ironic, ominous and sinister.

This book has 302 pages.
I've yet to find a commonality between the stories I've read so far. Nine Stories was published in 1948, seems to have taken place post WWII. The first three stories mention men and women who have been a part of the war, whether they be former lieutenants or military wives.

3 stories in. The characters and conversations Salinger creates are unbelievably real. I feel like I know the characters of these 10 page stories better than I know some characters that have a 300 page novel.

I didn't realize the first story would be about the Glass family! I sort of knew which direction it was going since I've read Franny and Zooey, but as for the collection, so far so good.

The first 2 stories 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish' and 'Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut' are amazing. Salinger is a pro at showing you something and leaving it up to you to figure out what is happening. Amazing!
