For Esme - with Love and Squalor: 4/5 I definitely liked the first half better than the second, but this was still strong.
Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes: 5/5 Excellent characterization.

Read three stories so far and they're all five stars for me. I'm trying to save the rest because I don't want them to end.

Just Before the War with the Eskimos: 4/5 I literally have no idea what this story 'means', or why Salinger decided to write it, but it's still well-written.
The Laughing Man: 4/5 Interesting use of story within a story.
Down at the Dinghy: 5/5 Very powerful; probably my favorite story here so far.

A Perfect Day for Bananafish: 4/5 I'm still trying to figure this one out - I maybe would've liked to see a little more of Seymour's life. But it's really well-written.
Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut: 5/5 An excellent portrait of nostalgia and loneliness.
Overall, there's a goddamn reason people like Salinger so much. I really like his writing style - he captures character voice in a way that few others can.

I don't know what I just read. It's one surreal sketch after another. It talks about innocence, rejection, failure, longings, acceptance. It twists my perspective and left me with a feeling unexplained. It speaks with no longer comprehensible train of thought. I forgot how it felt like to be a child.

It's not like I don't know who the author is, but for some reason I still thought I could just read bits of this before bed.

"De Daumier-Smiths's Blue Period" came along as a realistic picture of a frustrated young man who doesn't know where his life is taking him. As much as I'd have hated him in person, the story was incredible entertaining.

and who'd have thought that the usage of ordinary words to describe ordinary events of ordinary people could efficiently disarm you? I figure there's some sort of economy, a world lot of brilliance and wisdom to all this.

I really enjoyed "The Laughing Man", but afterwards it started to get a little dull. But only two stories to go!

"Just Before the War with the Eskimos" was a bit weird. Not sure what to think of Ginnie and Selena.

"Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut" convinced me with another of those amazing long conversations! And the imaginary friends of Ramon a were great.

Wow, with the background coming from "Franny and Zooey" the first short story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" is really shocking.

Ugh. I'm not wild about most of the stories in this book. I've read seven but still have two left, which also happen to be the two longest. I've made zero progress over the past two weeks, and I have other things to read.

The swinging door opened from the dining room and Boo Boo Tannenbaum, the lady of the house, came into the kitchen. She was a small, almost hipless girl of twenty-five, with styleless, colorless, brittle hair pushed back behind her ears, which were very large... Her joke of a name aside ... she was a stunning and final girl.
