Gosh, it's been years since I read Salinger, and I am struck anew at the perfection of these short stories. Dialogue that leaps off the page, so many feelings, this sense of desperation that permeates everything. But somehow they're still funny. Still sweet. I still smile, even though they're filled with such devastating loss.

20-somethings now (2016) and 20-somethings then, (in the 1940's), surprisingly not that different....see: Just Before a The War With The Eskimos

For Esmé is the best one so far, along with the Bananafish. Loved them.

I've heard Salinger send his stories to New Yorker several times until New Yorker agreed to publish his stories, now I see why...

I've just finished the first story: "a perfect day for bananafish" To be honest, I think it was completely nonsense!

I would be so far ahead in this book if I could find it...I'm pretty sure the cat stole it, it's under the bed, in his lair.
