She was a girl who for a ringing phone dropped exactly nothing. She looked as if her phone had been ringing continually ever since she had reached puberty.

I didn’t have the best experience reading The Catcher in the Rye in high school but I’ve heard his short stories are fantastic so I’m giving it a try. A Perfect Day for Bananafish was alright. I see how the symbolism and undertones are power but overall it was a meh story. 3.5/5

I'm three stories in, and I love this collection already. Salinger just has a way of capturing so MUCH in so few words, it's an absolute wonder to read. Also, he is a master at telling stories and backstories and everything the middle through dialogue- a true master at character interactions.

Am reading one story a day in order to ponder on these great stories. . . Today came across a perfect one for mother's day. . .and example of an awesome mother: Down at the Dinghy
Happy Mom's Day to all, regardless of gender or whether or not you've birthed anyone, for all the times you've served someone or something with that fierce protective nurturing we all have (but have assigned to parents). . .

Nice to get into short stories again. Salinger’s dialogue makes me happy.

A character just said "the whole thing's so fantastic it isn't even--" which is taken verbatim from The Catcher in the Rye. I wonder if that's intentional, or Salinger subconsciously recycled one of his old phrasings.

I was hooked from the first sentence (see bit below) and then addicted by the third paragraph. The way Salinger tells a story is fascinating to me. He gives you the setting and the plot through details like finishing a fingernail to communicate that she DIDN'T want to answer that phone, or through dialog that is so natural and real that you wonder if he had it recorded!
