Perfect day for bananafish, very well written. After WW2 a couple travel to Florida, staying in a hotel next to the beach. He was in the war, and came out scarred.

There’s no risk you’d be raising a little generation of ignoramus?
Why? they wouldn’t anymore be ignoramus then an elephant is. or a bird is. or a tree is” Teddy said “just because something is a certain way, instead of just behaves a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s an ignoramus.”

I’d just make them vomit up every bit of apple their parents and everybody made them take a bite out of.

I mean if you tell them the grass is green, it makes them start expecting the grass to look a certain way -your way -instead of some other way that may be just as good, and maybe much better ... I don’t know.

The same thing with grass, and other things. I wouldn’t even tell them grass is green. colors are only names.

I wouldn’t even tell them an elephant has a trunk. I might show them an elephant if I had some handy, but ’s let them just walk up to the elephant not knowing anything more about it than the elephant knew about them.

I mean even if their parents just told them an elephant’s big I’d make them empty that out. An elephant’s only big when it’s next to something else - a dog or a lady, for example.

Poets are always taking the weather so personally. they’re always sticking their emotions in things that have no emotions.

The hand writing itself was manuscript style, such as is currently being taught in American schools, instead of the old Palmer method. It was legible without it being pretty-pretty.

The fact is always obvious much too late, but the most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy a liquid.

what kind of f*cking stupid "Japanese" name is that?
I hate it when Western authors give this kind of weird "Japanese" names. Seriously, WTF.
It's just like that Yunioshi bullshit.

Bananafish: Originally published in the January 31, 1948, issue of The New Yorker. It was anthologized in 1949's 55 Short Stories from the New Yorker, as well as in Salinger's 1953 collection, Nine Stories. The story is an enigmatic examination of a young married couple, Muriel and Seymour Glass, while on vacation in Florida. It is the first of his stories to feature a member of the fictional Glass family.
