I think Down at the Dinghy might be my favorite of the stories so far.

Reading one story a day for nine days. (It only makes sense with a book called "Nine Stories," right?) So far I've read "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut," "Just Before the War with the Eskimos," and "The Laughing Man."
Today's selection: "Down at the Dinghy"

the narrator of “de daumier-smith’s blue period” was a bit of a jerk but also very relatable. young, obsessed with western europe, annoyed with the world, and way too eager to please. i’m not quite all of those but i did enjoy his character haha

Rereading more Salinger. It’s been well over a decade since I last read most of these stories. Forgot how hard “Bananafish” and “Uncle Wiggily” hit. Why it took me so long to get back to these, I have no earthly idea. But I’m here now and it’s absolutely wonderful.

'Rose my color is and white, Pretty mouth and green my eyes' — it used to remind me of her. She doesn't have green eyes —she has eyes like goddam sea shells, for Christsake — but it reminded me anyway.

“‘I mean they don’t seem able to love us just the way we are. They don’t seem able to love us unless they can keep changing us a little bit. They love their reasons for loving us almost as much as they love us, and most of the time more. It’s not so good, that way.’”
