Salinger's honestly such a great writer. What a breath of fresh air after On the Road.

Read "A Perfect Day for Bananafish". Having already read "Franny and Zooey" and "Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenters and Seymour an Introduction", I knew what was coming when I read the name Seymour and Florida, but the story still made me sad. As always with Salinger I loved the writing and description of actions and characters.

The last 2 stories are taking me forever especially De-Daumier Smith’s Blue Period. It’s absolutely horrible and is genuinely the worst of the nine stories.

bought this book solely to read the story called “A Perfect Day For Bananafish” bc i wanted to see references of the anime “Banana Fish” and it did not disappoint, there were both subtle and not so subtle connections and i’ve decided that Ash is a human representation of Salinger’s idea of the bananafish

For Esme is undoubtedly one of the best in here so far. The writing of dialogue between X and Esme shows how inside himself X was at the time of meeting. A man who never speaks much met someone whom he admires. The age thing is a bit weird, though I guess my grandfather was in the Navy at 15.

War with the Eskimos is weird. The 2 men are both characters in their own right that I’d like to see develop more. Also what’s with the wastebasket? Lots of stuff in there I want to explore but just the right amount is given to where it’s still mysterious enough to not be underwhelming.

I enjoy how every story (so far) is nothing more than a snapshot. A scene of normal life. Something that could most definitely happen. And they end right when they should. Though I guess that’s arguable to say about the first story.

J.D. Salinger is the kind of writer who takes the mundane and makes it something so completely devastating or complex. He uses dialogue to make you connect with his characters, and the more you learn about them, the more you find your heart breaking for them. I think it’s incredibly beautiful that he can say so much with the simplest language.

Honestly the only reason, I got this book was because one of the short stories was titled A Perfect Day for Banana Fish. Anyhow, the stories are quite interesting… but I’ll have to admit, they seem stupid if you don’t analyze the stories symbolism. My favourites so far are A Perfect Day for Banana Fish and Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut.
