Soon the Laughing Man had amassed the largest personal fortune in the world. Most of it he contributed anonymously to the monks of a local monastery—humble ascetics who had dedicated their lives to raising German police dogs.

“This is positively the last one for me!” Mary Jane called after her.
“Like hell it is. Who called who? And who came two hours late? You’re gonna stick around till I’m sick of you. The hell with your lousy career.”

Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes - it's a really good story and shows Salinger's talent for writing dialogue that feels authentic. But I can't say much more than that aside from wondering what the message is. On the surface level though, it is a very interesting story that is executed well - but feels like there could have been more to it. 7/10

This was supposed to be a quick re-read to cap off 2023 but it's now bled into this year and I'm not going to keep doing the story-by-story reviews. This will be picked up any time I get tired from school readings. ("For Esmé -- With Love and Squalor" is excellent though, of course) I'm in the middle of "Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes."

The Laughing Man: When I started reading this story, I got stuck on the metro for 40 minutes with a girl I went to high school with and was trying to read it to distract myself from the growing crowd in the metro car but it was so dull and i just gave in and started talking to the girl. When I took it back up again last week it was way more engaging and kind of fascinating as a lesser work of Salinger.

"To do otherwise, I feel, would be tantamount to implying or stating that the difference in spiritual sorties between St. Francis and the average, highstrung, Sunday leper-kisser is only a vertical one."
