Yeah, I can't believe she'd use her thousands of followers to do this. When I posted my review, I wasn't even a Top Reviewer here! What is this if not a popular influencer bullying an anonymous reviewer with few friends?
Please, help me report this user for abuse of the website, this is against GR's rules too. And YouTube, if you can. This can't be tolerated.
I had a different comment here, but decided to delete it because I really don't feel like dealing with BS from people on the internet. Let's just summarize it to: people need to stop because it's your review and your space to share your opinions. Also I detest when youtubers make a spectacle out of something, react to it so strongly, then tack on "but don't harass them" as if that's going to stop people. That's not how the internet works.
Anomaly wrote: "Your review: "I didn't like the sexual content and felt it wasn't a faithful retelling of the story. Also, how about some trigger warnings for rape and pedo shit?!"
This Youtuber: "Omg purity culture..."
I'm shaken, truly shaken. I've been called all sorts of names FOR OVER A YEAR (notice I posted that review in 2022), the first attack was within hours of my posting, and this self-absorbed YouTuber thinks it's fine if she posts a disclaimer asking people not to come after me? What did she think was going to happen? She has more than 40K followers! And I hardly have 400 friends here. She went for the low-hanging fruit, used my name and my account to bully me behind my back and incite her watchers against me.
I have dozens and dozens of deleted comments under that review. The last one is who named her as the source.
Please help me report her? This can't be let to just stay.
I wouldn't put much faith in Youtube doing anything, personally. Not that it isn't worth trying! But I've seen some really mean and/or messed up stuff get to stay while things that aren't even bad get the banhammer. It's the wild west sometimes.
I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It's ridiculous. What happened to "I dislike this review, so I'll stop reading it and scroll past"? Making an entire Youtube video on it is wild. It's not like you're some mega-popular book blogger or professional reviewer, in which case there might be some merit in people wanting to debate an officially published review. You're just a user of Goodreads.
Wow reads with Rachel did this to you? I just watched that video and she is a huge hypocrite. She’s all about reviewers have a right to their opinions except when she disagrees with them I guess. Holy crap. I unfollowed and sent her a note about her shit behaviour. I’m sorry this happened to you. You have a right to your opinion and to express it in your review space without attack from a big YouTuber.
Anomaly wrote: " Also I detest when youtubers make a spectacle out of something, react to it so strongly, then tack on "but don't harass them" as if that's going to stop people."
Exactly! What did she think was going to happen? They don't even stop to think who is behind the review is a simple GR user and not some big name blogger or tuber that'll influence people through thousands of clicks, like her. They never stop to think of the damage they do.
She and her followers merely used my account to project their bile. They have a problem with "purity culture," whatever that is (I'm not American, what do I know of that?) and don't see but an easy pick. I've even been asked if I have a right to talk about CSA, as if I'm going to disclose my private life for their trauma porn needs!
This is definitely a case of someone channeling Pick Me Energy and using the pull of clickbait hate as well as a soapbox stand and signs to rally as a way to gain followers who think by aligning forces, they're doing something just. It's disgusting and so obviously wrong that I'm baffled they lack self awareness
Anomaly wrote: "I wouldn't put much faith in Youtube doing anything, personally. Not that it isn't worth trying! But I've seen some really mean and/or messed up stuff get to stay while things that aren't even bad ..."
I know, but I just can't stand down and let her have her way with my account. I keep getting trolls because of her, and I blame her for the consistent harassment I've suffered. I'll report her here and on YouTube regardless of what they do, and I will let people know what she has done.
KristynRene wrote: "Have to know the account to report her. Is it the same as her YT channel name??"
Yes, she is Reads with Rachel here on GR too.
Kristina wrote: "Wow reads with Rachel did this to you? I just watched that video and she is a huge hypocrite. She’s all about reviewers have a right to their opinions except when she disagrees with them. Holy crap..."
Thank you, Kristina! It means a lot to me and makes me feel I'm not alone. I'm not popular or known, but I can fight back if bullied.
I’ll send you my message to her privately. But no matter what your review said, this was entirely uncalled for.
Kristina wrote: "I’ll send you my message to her privately. But no matter what your review said, this was entirely uncalled for."
Thank you, I hope GR takes action, though I don't have much faith in them (or YouTube).
I am sorry that happened to you. Reviews are so that we can share our opinions about a book and have healthy discourse about them. People shouldn’t be coming for people just because they have a difference of opinion.
I’m so sorry you’re being bullied.
I’ve reported the YT video. I hope they actually do something about it.

Thank you, Joanna. I do agree, that's what we are for, not to be farmed for clicks and likes by the popular users & tubers.
Help me report her?
Sorry this happened to you, my friend. I’m not giving that video any extra views/clicks, but I just wish people would respect other opinions and accept that the books they like may be disliked by other readers. Directing abuse towards other readers is not okay.
Hugs.
Nataliya wrote: "Directing abuse towards other readers is not okay."
That's right, and this user projected all her issues with whoever bothers her on me without knowing a lick about me! Like, I'm not American and I don't have a bloody idea what that "purity culture" she talks about is! All is projections, assumptions, strawmanning, and downright bile.
You can report her here on GR if you don't want to on YT, she has broken the terms of use for GR by doing this. Harassing other reviewers in public and by name isn't allowed.
This is awful, I’m so sorry for you! And I’m American and have no idea what the heck “purity culture” is either, so you’re not alone.
Sarah wrote: "This is awful, I’m so sorry for you! And I’m American and have no idea what the heck “purity culture” is either, so you’re not alone."
Whatever that is, it's clear this was hoisted on an unsuspecting reviewer (me) whom she clearly thought wouldn't call her out for her made-up claims.
Help me report her? Either here or on YT, or both, please.
This is awful, I'm so sorry that this happened to you. Bullies are such cowards. I reported the YouTube video.
All this seriousness over you tube influencing, for books or any other topic, is just beyond my understanding… And to bully?!… This should be something criminal, I think… :(
That's not okay. :/ (I don't know this booktuber, but I won't give any views to this link)
I see some other commenters have already reported the account, not sure if youtube will do anything about it because they're quite lax about many things, but hopefully GR will.
There’s something about this that feels so underhanded… she knows her reach and her platform, and to go after someone like that instead of engaging in what could’ve been a fair (albeit heated) discourse on even ground…
A polarizing book like this would of course trigger an entire spectrum of feelings and opinions from its readers so I don’t understand why she couldn’t just have said her piece on the book and left it at that.
I’m sorry this is happening to you :( I’ve reported the video and will be reporting the account as well
Hi, Canadian here, what the f is even “purity culture”? 🥲 also it’s a bit wild to me that they would make a video like that talking about GoodReads reviews and showing the reviews. That was poorly handle, sorry you’re going through this
What absolute bullshit. The thing is, the things she says don’t matter. Your review is your personal opinion on the book, nothing else. Anything else is just irrelevant. It’s okay to have a different opinion about the things you say in the review, because that’s just your personal opinion. But this? Throwing you under the bus like that? That’s online bullying. That’s not okay. Hope you can get that video taken down, so that it may stop.
Also, “purity culture?” You said it yourself in your review, there just needed to be trigger warnings. So people know what they will face if they buy this book. So people have the right expectations when they start reading. Because not everyone likes that in the first place. And it’s your right to like or dislike that, and voice your personal opinion about that in your review of the book. You NEVER should be attacked for that.
Sorry to see you have to go through all this, Marquise. But it’s at least good to finally know the source of all those issues. So you can take it out by the roots.
So sorry to see this, M. Asking followers to not target someone is a way to make them do it with excessive aggression. This is a common tactic some people adopt on social media to 'deal' with any voices they don't like. This looks more like a planned attack.
I went back there out of curiosity, and she's seriously in comments trying to defend what she did as "it's not personal." And if she thinks it's not personal to call someone else's personal opinion "so shitty" in a widely-accessed public format where they can't even defend themselves and then try to drag BS loaded accusations (all the "boo hoo people think somehow this one person's opinion is invalidating survivors" nonsense) like that into it, I'm scared to see what level of bullying she partakes in when she DOES intend it to be a personal attack.
Repulsive, immature behavior on the part of Rachel and an abuse of YouTube! This just makes me hate "Booktube" more than I already do. >:[
Asking people not to attack you after giving them all the information they need to do so is disingenuous. If she truly didn't want you attacked, she would have left off your name and review and only referred to the content of unfavorable reviews in a general and brief way while reviewing the book herself.
I'm so sorry, Marquise. I'll report on YT and here, but, sadly, the chances of this video being deleted are extremely slim. YT very, very rarely removes anything and allows the most heinous content to continue circulating (and remain in the "Suggested" sidebar). They don't give two shits--and they're not legally obligated to either (therein lies the problem). GR may do more; I've had decent luck with this site, and Rachel did violate their TOS. Her account--ideally IP address--should be swiftly banned.
As for what YOU can do, as I see it, you have three options:
1) Restrict your comments to friends-only (although in a stupid oversight, the setting works for reviews only, not statuses)
2) Ask GR to close commenting on just that review. I'm not sure they'll do it, but I know they did it for one reviewer years ago, shortly before they gave users the restrict setting. This reviewer was receiving the worst abuse I've ever seen on GR, though; in other words, they did it only because it was an extreme case.
3) Turn off notifications for comments on that review. You'll still get comments, but you won't see them--unless you go to the review directly, of course.
If you restrict commenting, you may then get abuse in your inbox, in which case you can restrict PMing to friends-only.
I hope that helps. I know lots of people criticize comment-restricting, but it's priceless in instances of abuse like this, and I think you'll find, as I did, that it's not as socially limiting as it sounds. I'd at least test-drive it to see whether it makes you feel better.
Regarding "purity culture," here's an official defintion:
“Purity culture” is the term often used for the evangelical movement that attempts to promote a biblical view of purity by discouraging dating and promoting virginity before marriage, often through the use of tools such as purity pledges, symbols such as purity rings, and events such as purity balls.
It's not an American concept but an Evangelical-Christianity concept. The people attacking you probably think you're a sexist EC nut. However, nothing in your review indicates you promote purity culture or are EC; these attackers are just half-wits who don't understand the idea of reading analytically and critiquing execution of a theme.
Would someone please link me to Rachel's GR page so I can block her? There's no way to search for users, and I don't want to give her shameful video another view (assuming her GR account is linked there). Thanks.
What a B**** to put it simply. Don't let it ruin your day. She is a waste of your time. I don't know much of this but I get the gist. Sorry this happened to you.
Kristina wrote: "https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/8..."

@everyone who commented,
Thank you! I am deeply distressed and have not slept well
I do not accept Rachel's excuses. She made it personal by singling me out and sending the mob after me. She monetised it at Patteon.
Please, report her.
She definitely used you to stir up emotion in her followers for likes, clicks, and ad revenue. She’s looking for content like that as that’s what her followers go for. Her authors behaving badly segments are fun for that reason but when she comes for small goodreads reviewers she’s basically doing what she hates to see authors doing, using her large platform to silence a dissenting opinion. Maybe she didn’t write the book but she is fan girling and gate keeping here and is in complete denial about it. She also projected many of her issues onto your review and read and called out subtext that just wasn’t there. A book is open to interpretation but a review is not. You can interpret a work of fiction and critique it all day long, but calling out someone’s opinion based on your misinterpretation of it is so fucked up I can’t even begin to understand how she doesn’t see it. She’s not an expert by any means, she’s just a person who knows how to rile people up with her content. You definitely won’t be the last person she tries to take down for having a different opinion. These types of content creators get high off this and think they are doing social Justice when they are punching down in the worst way. She will never see it for what it is though and I doubt she will be dealt with by YouTube because of her little disclaimer. I’d do what Caroline suggests and see about turning off comments on that review. No one is looking for intelligent discourse at this point. They are in ‘mob mode’ and vilifying you with her implied permission.
Even if YT don't do a thing, I have to call her out. She has to face the consequences, and that update on my review has to be the consequences staring straight at her as "This is what your misbehaviour caused." 😢
"I'm not an author, I don't have to be nice" is definitely a hot take. I mean, the main reason authors need to stay away from reviewers is because their platform and audience is huge and this puts the free speech of random people on the internet in jeopardy. So using a single review for clicks and pretending like the reviewer in itself is not just "wrong" about their opinion about a fictional novel, but also morally wrong for publishing said opinion is ... yeah. Very hard to justify behavior.
I think this Youtuber just doesn't understand that there is a massive difference between a journalist writing a public review for the Guardian and a regular person just presenting their opinion on a book on a random social network that no one was going to read anyway.
She’s in deep denial Louise. She thinks it’s ok because it’s a cool trend to take down one star reviews of your fave book. She’s almost delusional about it.
She's also a massive hypocrite. In the YouTube comments, she's claiming that she just ignores it when people tear down her opinions. But that's not really true. She had a temper tantrum in the comments of one of her one-star reviews because people called her out on how she posted a few accusations in the Goodreads text and expected people to go watch an hour-long video she made for elaboration, while refusing to summarize answers to questions people had about the review. She clearly only cares about views, and being seen as "right," not about reviewers' right to a safe space for their opinions or the damage she can do with her platform.
